Hi, everyone!
Mary McDonnell’s birthday is coming up on April 28, and as we’ve done for the last several years, we’ll be holding a fundraiser in her honor. We had a charity in mind but per Mary’s request, we’ll be asking for donations to two new organizations instead.
The Sinte Gleska University is a college located on on an Indian reservation in South Dakota dedicated to “reenforcing our foundation for the people to go forward in the Lakota way.” Mary, along with several of her co-stars, was honored by the university and inducted into the Sioux Tribal Nation for their depiction of the Lakota people in the film Dances With Wolves.
The Everett Company Stage School is a multidisciplinary arts school located in Providence, Rhode Island dedicated to creating original works using dance, theater, and video. They emphasize collaboration and leadership development, and work to instill these values in their students while allowing them to explore the arts in meaningful ways.
Last year, fans came together and raised nearly $2000 for the Lyme Disease Association in Mary’s honor. This year, we’re excited to be supporting these two outstanding schools, and hope to get as many fans involved as possible.
To participate, we ask that you make a donation to one or both schools and email your donation amount(s) to Mary Stanton at dixgrl78@gmail.com to be counted in the final tally, which will be sent to Mary along with a list of donors. Donations of any amount are welcome and very much appreciated by the schools, the Mary Cares team, and Mary McDonnell. Anyone who makes a donation will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a hand signed promotional photo of Mary and her Battlestar Galactica co-star Edward James Olmos.

And please, if you’re interested in being involved, spread the word to anyone you think might be interested in participating! The deadline has been pushed back to April 30. For those of you who haven’t donated before, this is the basic rundown. Go to the Autism Speaks website and make whatever donation you can afford to make. Let us know at the Mary Cares LiveJournal Group, via email at marymcdonnellcares@yahoo.com, or here via a private Tumblr message so that we can add your donation to the total tally.
This year there is a new cool addition to the fundraiser because Mary was generous and sweet enough to sign an 8x10 photo for one lucky donor. If you donate any amount, your name goes in the drawing for the photo.
Just want to reiterate that it doesn’t matter how much or little you can afford - every bit is appreciated, and it’s all in Mary’s honor. So please, if you can, this is a great way to help celebrate an actress we all love and honor her on her birthday! We’ll send her a card with the final amount and a list of donors.
This is the seventh year fans have come together to raise money in honor of Mary’s birthday. Last year we raised over $2000. We have nearly $400 so far. With two weeks to go and a lot of dedicated fans, let’s see if we can beat that record!
